Great design is the foundation of space saving and elegant custom cabinetry. From kitchen cabinets, custom bookcases closets, media/entertainment centers, to floating shelves. Many of our clients love creating a matching theme for the furniture throughout their home, reach out to one of our carpentry specialists to get the planning process started. Our craftsmen have years of experience, and our attention to detail can help you turn your dream home into reality. How our process works

A. A.

The first step is speaking to an experienced contractor at Shepard Custom Cabinets about what you want from your custom cabinetry. A great place to start, is to send us the dimensions of your rooms, either through sketches or architectural blueprints. After we learn the extent of work required we can provide you the first cost estimate. This will begin the planning phase, and we can assist you with making the final decisions on what you want.

B. Design Details & Consultation

After doing our initial due diligence and providing an estimate to you, we will begin the design and consultation phase. We communicate with you by phone and email, and will also need to visit the site to take final measurements. This is where we finalize the design plans and estimate the time it will take to complete the project. We also create a complete list of supplies. This phase will determine the cost of the project.

C. Exact Drawings and Deposit Payment

During this step we will produce a payment schedule and give you ample notice for any upcoming payments. The payment schedule coincides with the subsequent phases of the project, the final plans, cabinet fabrication, and the final building.

After the planning phase is completed, your project will be added to our schedule once the down payment has been paid. At this point we will have a set of drawings that will contain the exact measurements and required materials. One of the main reasons we have opted for these processes is due to the challenges that arise from changes once the fabrication starts. Once you give us your instructions, we will fabricate your cabinets.

D. Building the Cabinets and Onsite Installation

This is where all the pieces come together. Your cabinets will be built and crafted at our Anaheim location. After the fabrication phase is complete, we will transport everything onto your property for final installation. When the entire project is completed, the final deposit is due. This usually takes between 4 and 8 weeks. Because custom cabinets are made to order, the turnaround time on your project will depend on various factors such as the style of cabinets, how many pieces, and the labor time for each unique piece.

Different styles of cabinet doors
Selecting the proper cabinet door is important because it is the most visible part of your cabinet face. There are two types of cabinet doors that can affect the overall appearance of your cabinet: the style and how it is attached to the frame. Each will have a large impact on the character of your cabinet.

Cabinet Door Attachments
Full-overlay cabinet doors completely cover the cabinet’s front and provide more storage space. This one-continuous low profile surface is very popular today because the cabinet frame is covered in 100 percent.

Cabinets with inset doors have their door built into the frame and sit flush when closed. Sometimes you may see the hinges attached to an outside surface. This requires precision during fabrication.

Partial overlay cabinets expose more of the cabinet frame with approximately 1″ to 2″.

The Differences between Cabinet Door Styles
The recessed panel door gives the cabinet a sleek, streamlined look. This design is popular in contemporary cabinets and offers many design options.

Frameless glass front cabinets have a single glass pane, but no dividing mullions.

Mullion frame doors have horizontal and vertical bars that break down the cabinet’s face into sections. The glass inserts in the panes and sections allow you to see the interior of each cabinet.

Cabinets with raised panel doors feature a central panel that is elevated and surrounded by a recessed border. Raised panel doors are very popular and can be found on all types of cabinets, from classic to modern.

The slab cabinet door, or flat-panel door, is simply a single slab of lumber and is totally flat.

Handcrafted bath cabinets and custom vanities
A refined tidy bathroom can really help improve your quality of life, and by adding custom bath cabinetry you can really upgrade the aesthetics and add to the storage space. While you are brainstorming the design for your custom vanities and cabinets, you should write a list of all your storage needs. Do you need the space for makeup application built into your vanity? Do you have an abundance of items in your bathroom, and would love to have as much storage space as possible? Do you need cabinet space to store your towels? Once you have gleaned your specific requirements, an expert carpenter at Shepard Custom Cabinets can assist you come up with a perfect design.

You can use a custom-made vanity to fully use your space, renovate your bathroom, and find a place for all your stuff! By hand making creative storage solutions for your bathroom cabinets and vanities, you can improve the aesthetics and functionality of your bathroom. You will feel calm and relaxed after a hectic day.

Custom Media Centers Handcrafted
In addition to custom cabinets, one the more popular pieces of furniture we build at Shepard Custom Cabinets is custom media centers, otherwise known as entertainment centers. A entertainment center houses your television, sound systems and video game consoles. Many of our customers find that their television is an essential piece of your daily life. This is why they are able to get a custom-built entertainment centre.

Ready-to-assemble (RTA), media centers that are often made of cheaper materials such as particleboard don’t last long. At Shepard Custom Cabinets we only use the best quality hard wood to build your custom media center, and this will make your media center look fantastic today, as well as stay looking great years into the future. An endless tangle wire mess in the middle of your living room can distract from your surroundings and make it difficult to see. We can help you design cabinets that will accommodate your wires and conceal clutter.

Stains and Finishes
In addition to the style of your cabinet doors, the size and shape, the type of materials, you can also add more character by choosing a finish. A finish is used to treat the surface of the cabinet to give it a desirable characteristics, such as improved protection, and alterations of it’s color and texture.

Waterborne finishes are used to add protection against scratches and damage, and it is non toxic to the environment. Waterborne finishes can be fast drying and can mimic the appearance of many other stains. Waterborne finishes are great if you like the look of grain patterns on your wood and want to change its color.

Glaze finishes can add additional texture and color to the surface of your cabinets, and can be brushed right on top of cabinets that have been painted or stained. If you like a glossy look, glazing your cabinets will give it a shine, as well as add damage and moisture protection. You can paint your cabinets to hide the wood grain, and you can change the color of your cabinets as much as you like. One popular option is to paint your cabinets a flat white color. There are a ton of options out there, and the expert craftsmen at Shepard Custom Cabinets are here to help, so give us a call today.
